سطيف هي ولاية جزائرية تقع في شرق الجزائر ، تحمل عاصمتها نفس الإسم : مدينة سطيف. تعني كلمة سطيف، التربة السوداء بالرومانية.
تقع على بعد 300 كلم شرق الجزائر العاصمة،و تعتبر إحدى أهم المدن، فهي ثاني ولاية بعد ولاية الجزائر من حيث الكثافة السكانية، ويطلق عليها الجزائريون في الغالب عاصمة الهضاب العليا.
موقعها المتميز على هضبات جبال مغرس و بابور جعل مناخها السهبي قاريا، حيث تزدهر فيه زراعة القمح والشعير والخضروات والحمضيات، وقد أضاف لها سد عين زادة الذي يعتبر من السدود الكبيرة بالجزائر إمكانية ري مساحات واسعة.
تطورت سطيف في السنوات الأخيرة بسرعة فائقة حيث أصبحت مركزا اقتصاديا وتجاريا كبيرا، عبرت عنه بإنشاء مناطق صناعية وتجارية عديدة، وازدهرت فيها الحرف التقليدية والخدمات والفنون. والى جانب أنها تضم جامعتين كبيرتين، فهي تحتوي أيضا على العديد من المعاهد والمراكز العلمية والتكنولوجية.
تعتبر سطيف من بين المدن الجزائرية التي تتميز بديناميكية اقتصادية وثقافية قلت مجاراتها في الجزائر، لاغرو فهي ملتقى طرق كل الجهات الجزائرية، ومعبر اقتصادي وسياحي لا يمكن الاستغناء عنه.
